THE BIRTH OF FRANS HALS

Frans Hals was born in Antwerp in 1580.

 

MOVIN TO HAARLEM

His family moved to Haarlem in 1585, where he lived for most of his life.

 

A MENTOR OF FRANS HALS

One of his mentors was Karel Van Mander, who he took painting lessons from.

 

FRANS'S FIRST KNOWN PAINTING

In 1611 he painted his earliest known painting, "Jacobus Zaffius".

 

FRANS'S LATER PAINTINGS

In 1616 he painted the life-size group portrait, "The Banquet of the St George Militia Company". Frans Hals’ later works are darker and calmer.

 

THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF FRANS HALS

Frans Hals died in Haarlem in 1666 and was buried in the city's St. Bavo Church.

 

THE PAINTINGS' STYLE OF FRANS HALS

Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo, "What a joy it is to see a Frans Hals, how different it is from the paintings - so many of them - where everything is carefully smoothed out in the same manner." Instead of giving a smooth finish to his paintings, Hals kept his brustrokes visible, evident in "Family Portrait".

This was not a popular technique at the time, but it would be adopted later by the Impressionists.
